Who can Apply

The United World Colleges (UWC) movement is looking for exceptional young people who are passionate about learning, open to new cultures and perspectives, and committed to creating a more peaceful and sustainable world. If you're inspired by UWC’s mission and excited about living and learning alongside students from around the globe, we encourage you to apply.

UWC is the only global educational movement that selects students from within their own countries, based on merit and potential, not ability to pay. Selected students attend one of 18 UWC schools and colleges worldwide, where they pursue the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma and take part in a rich program of community service, outdoor activities, and creative engagement.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply through the Nigerian National Committee for UWC (UWC Nigeria), you must:

  • Be a Nigerian citizen (regardless of where you currently live or study).

Note: Non-Nigerians living in Nigeria should apply through their own national committees or the UWC Global Selection Programme.

  • Be 16 or 17 years old by September 1, 2026. Your date of birth must fall between September 1, 2008 and August 31, 2010.
  • Have demonstrated strong academic ability, with completed WAEC/IGCSE O’ Levels or their recognised equivalent.

Exceptionally strong students in SS3 may also apply based on two years of academic performance and continuous assessment.

Selection Criteria

Successful applicants typically demonstrate the following:

  • Academic strength and a strong likelihood of success in the IB Diploma Programme.
  • Openness to diverse cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives, with a genuine interest in international understanding.
  • Emotional maturity and adaptability, including the ability to thrive in a new and challenging environment.
  • A spirit of service, compassion, and active contribution to school or community life.
  • Involvement in extracurricular activities such as arts, sports, leadership, or volunteerism.
  • Clarity of expression and confidence, with the ability to represent Nigeria in a diverse international community.

Candidates are expected to show a clear understanding of UWC’s values and a personal commitment to contributing to the UWC mission.

UWC believes that to achieve peace and a sustainable future, the values it promotes are crucial:

  • International and intercultural understanding
  • Celebration of difference
  • Personal responsibility and integrity
  • Mutual responsibility and respect
  • Compassion and service
  • Respect for the environment
  • A sense of idealism
  • Personal challenge
  • Action and personal example

Note: While a parent or guardian must co-sign the application, the decision to apply must be made by the student. The motivation must come from within.
